UK Art & Framing Industry Awards 2004

The glamorous Reebok Stadium, Bolton, was a magnificent setting for the 2004 UK Art & Framing Industry Awards. The UK Art & Framing Industry Awards is the most prestigious event in the art and framing calendar and is hotly contested by both leading players within the industry and newly emerging talents. The industry celebrates its successes and rewards excellence in art sales, framing, innovation, export, and best practice.

'The benchmarks we set are very high and many good businesses don't make the grade as finalists. Make no mistake, the awards go to the best.'
Dave Woolass GCF, Acorn Arts, Master of the Fine Art Trade Guild

Quotes from the winners
'Five years ago, I took three unstretched canvases to Spring Fair Birmingham to show Washington Green, on the strength of which I was offered a three-year contract. Now I feel I've achieved my goal.'
Govinder, Best-selling Published Artist

'Recognition by the industry means a lot to us because it's getting harder to be number one; everyone is doing a more professional job.'
Ian Wetherby-Blythe of Castle Galleries, Art Retailer of the Year

'The two awards Fringe Arts has collected are a positive vote for the small independent. It's a myth that businesses like mine, a small, professional workshop run from home, can't work to the highest standards. Quality is the only criteria.' Lyn Hall GCF, Fringe Arts, Free-thinking Framing Award

'This is our eighth award and we're very, very pleased. Awards make us look hard at what we do and how we do it and they are very important to the credibility of our business. Now very prestigious businesses are coming to us because they hear about the awards we have won.'
Martin Tracy GCF, Framing Workshop, Framing Business of Distinction

The Judging
There are different judging processes for the awards; for example, some were most effectively judged by a panel of experts, while others were selected by votes from retail businesspeople. The entire Guild retail membership, around 1000 businesses, was invited to vote for the Best-selling and Up & Coming Published Artist awards. Lists of nominated artists were sent out, and members indicated their best-sellers. Respondents were also invited to list the three framing suppliers and publishers which provide the best service, from which the shortlist and winner for the Customer Service award was worked out.
The framing awards were judged by representatives from the sponsor companies, who met to examine the frames, all of which were presented anonymously. The committee also helped to shortlist the Innovation award.
The Framing Business of Distinction and Art Retailer of the Year are scored by both a 'mystery shopper' and the analysis of a detailed entry form.
A panel of judges examined submission material from entrants to the Art Business Website, New Business and Innovation awards. The judging panel included Pankaj Patel of The Regency Hotel; Richard Whale of the Speech Recognition Company and Jonathan Dodd of Waterhouse & Dodd.
The new Export Achievement award was judged by an analysis of the post-show reports submitted to the UK Trade & Investment by overseas exhibitors. These were considered by Cox's Exhibitions, Guild staff and feedback from UK Trade & Investment (sponsors and part of the DTI).
