GCF Advanced Conservation Framing
GCF Advanced Conservation Framing is a test of skills required when mounting and framing artwork to Guidl Conservation and Museum Levels. Work presented must be of faultless quality
You should be able to:
- Demonstrate a practical understand of the Guild Mountboard Standards. This is ESSENTIAL
- Understand handling, storage and display requirements of valuable artworks
- Recognise different types of artwork and their substrates
- Recognise and understand different causes and types of damage to artworks
- Write condition reports for customers and for conservators
- Cut bevel windows in thick mountboard

Requirements
For all Advanced modules, you must be:
- A GCF
- A Guild Member
- Experienced in the module chosed
- Up-to-date with the specifics of materials, techniques and framing levels required
- You must maintain your Guild Membership if you wish to promote your GCF Advanced status

How long does the exam take?
Candidates are tested individually on a one-to-one basis with the examiner. Each exam takes approximately three and a half hours with time beforehand for practice. Results are notified to the candidate 10–14 days after testing
What do you need?
You will need to prepare and show the examiner four pictures, as described in the GCF Advanced Accreditation Conservation Framing Study Guide. These are: an artwork on paper framed to
Museum Level; a float mounted artwork close framed to
Conservation Level; a 3D item of memorabilia framed to
Conservation Level and using frame extension; and a windowmount of given dimensions using 2000 micron Conservation or Cotton Museum mountboard

A study guide, GCF Advanced Accreditation: Conservation Framing, covering all aspects of the module, with full details of what the exam entails, is available. Candidates are also advised to prepare by reading the Guild's handbook on the Conservation Framing and other specialist publications. The Study Guide is only £15 to members & £25 to non-members. Read & Learn
Make sure you have been mounting and framing to both Conservation and Museum Levels long enough and often enough to feel confident and competent in the required elements of the exam. If not, take a short training course with an experienced trainer. |

GCF Test Centres
Thanks to the generosity and support of Guild members we are able to offer GCF exam facilities worldwide. GCF Advanced examinations normally take place at the examiner's premises and overseas by an international examiner. It is also possible to take the exam at the candidate's workshop though an additional charge may be incurred
